Origanum vulgare
An easy-to-grow perennial herb that is a classic in Mediterranean cuisine – indispensable in tomato sauces, pizza and pasta dishes. It has a compact growth habit and small, aromatic leaves with a strong scent and taste. Also excellent as an ornamental plant and bee plant.
• Perennial
• Height: approx. 40–50 cm
• Good for pollinators
• Can be grown in pots or outdoors
• Winter hardy in large parts of the country
Culture:
• Pre-cultivate indoors March–April
• Sow shallowly – do not cover the seeds
• Germination: 10–15 days at 20–22 °C
• Planted out when the risk of frost is over
• Harvest leaves by hand or whole stems for drying
Perfect to have near the kitchen for fresh use – both as a fresh spice and as a dried herb for the winter.
