Loofah – Washcloth

Description:
The sponge cucumber is an annual climbing plant that can develop vines up to 2 meters long. Its green, cylindrical fruits resemble cucumbers and are used when ripe to make natural bath sponges. The plant is also an excellent choice for covering fences, pergolas and gazebos, adding a decorative touch to the garden.

One package contains 1 gram of seeds, which corresponds to approximately 9 seeds. (+/- 20%)


Sowing instructions

Sowing depth: 2–3 cm

  • Cultivation: Sow seeds in greenhouses in March-April. Use well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and keep the soil moist. The seeds germinate best at temperatures of 20–25 °C. When the plants are 10–15 cm tall, they are ready for planting out.
  • Planting out: Plant out pre-grown seedlings outdoors from May 20th, when the risk of frost is over.

Plant spacing: 100 x 50–60 cm


Flowering and Harvest

  • Flowering period: July – September
  • Harvest the fruits when they are ripe and let them dry to use as washcloths.
